Toddler Dies in Hospital After Irvine Hit-and-Run Crash

A 2-year-old girl died at the hospital Sunday afternoon, four days after she was injured in an Irvine hit-and-run crash that also claimed her grandmother's life, police said.

The toddler's 7-year-old brother and 28-year-old mother remained at hospital in stable condition, an Irvine Police Department news release said. The girl's grandmother, Katherine Hampton, was declared dead at the scene of the crash Wednesday night.

Alec Scott Abraham was arrested in connection with the three-car crash at Alton Parkway and Muirlands Boulevard. The 20-year-old Costa Mesa resident was being held on $1 million bail and expected to be arraigned Monday. He faces felony charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run.

Police said they were investigating street racing as a possible cause of the crash.

Investigators said Abraham left the scene on foot after the collision, leaving behind the black Ford Mustang he was believed to be driving. He was found at a park in Costa Mesa the next day.

A woman in her 30s who was in a Honda Civic also involved in the collision was rescued from the vehicle and taken to a trauma center. She has since been released.
