Van Carrying Oxygen Tanks Catches Fire, Shuts Down 57 Freeway

Shortly after 4 p.m., someone reported what appeared to be a moving truck emitting flames.

A Sigalert has been lifted for the 57 Freeway near Katella Avenue in OC Tuesday afternoon after a truck carrying oxygen tanks caught fire on the freeway, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Shortly after 4 p.m., someone reported what appeared to be a moving truck emitting flames.

Within minutes of the first report, CHP communications reported that the van carrying oxygen tanks was exploding, though officials said they could not confirm that.

The grass on the eastbound side of the freeway, next to the burning truck, reportedly caught fire and officials could be seen spraying the hillside.

The incident closed down the north- and southbound lanes for less than 20 minutes. As of 4:35 p.m., the southbound lanes had been reopened.

The Sigalert was issued at about 4:23 p.m., according to CHP. Shortly after 6 p.m., all lanes on the freeway were reopened.
