Six cars of a Union Pacific Freight train derailed Tuesday morning, causing a major freeway problem in Colton.

The derailment occurred at about 2:20 a.m. near Valley Boulevard and 7th Street, said Colton city firefighters. One of the cars hit an overpass support to the 10 Freeway, according to fire officials.
The highway patrol closed the freeway in both directions to investigate whether any of the supports were damaged. They also closed the transition between the 10 and 215 freeways in both directions.
The highway patrol opened both freeways at about 5:40 a.m. Another freeway closure might be required later Tuesday when the overturned rail cars are lifted back on the tracks.
At least one tanker car was carrying a highly corrosive chemical, but fire officials said the chemical did not leak from the tanker.
Wilson Elementary School and Colton High School were closed as a precaution.

The cleanup might continue into Wednesday morning. Nearby surface streets remained closed late Tuesday morning.
