Triple Shooting Leaves Man Dead in Whittier

A man was killed and another man and a woman were wounded in a shooting early Saturday morning in unincorporated Whittier.

The triple shooting was reported at 12:54 a.m. in the 13200 block of Imperial Highway, said Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Information Bureau.

It all began around 1 a.m. when some patrons got into an argument with one of the security guards at the Sportsman Lounge bar, said LASD Lt. John Corina. "It looks like the security guard and these people knew each other," Corina said.

"There might have been some kind of personal dispute" that spilled into the parking lot, culminating in the patrons and security guard shooting each other with handguns, Corina said.

One of the patrons got into a car, hit a center median and crashed into a building. That male patron suffered at least one bullet wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Corina said the man's car was struck by bullets, but it was unclear whether his wounds were inflicted before or after he entered the car.

The security guard, identified as a 41-year-old man, and a 25-year-old woman were also shot and taken to a local hospital, Corina said. They are both expected to survive.

Investigators are still trying to determine who started the shooting and whether the security guard should face any criminal charges or if he was acting in self-defense.
