UC Riverside Brings More Than $1 Billion to the National Economy

New report shows UCR helps drive local and national economies

The University of California, Riverside is an economic engine that is connected to $1.4 billion in economic activity nationwide, according to UCR.

The university is well known for biology and computer science. A recent study shows that UCR is responsible directly and indirectly for 16,335 jobs, most of them in the Inland Empire. UCR's economic impact report tracked the result of spending by students, visitors and retirees during fiscal year 2009-2010.

During that time, UC Riverside had $544,442,000 in revenue, and expenditures of $412,884,894. That number crosses the billion-dollar mark when the results of UCR-related spending is factored into the study. The university itself employs 6,985 full and part-time employees.

"Our faculty generate research funding and develop technologies and innovations that can be developed commercially. Our students bring business to local shops and restaurants. And UCR is both one of the biggest employers in the region and the developer of a knowledge-based workforce," said UCR Chancellor Timothy P. White in a statement.

The campus will undergo another growth spurt when it opens the UCR School of Medicine in 2013.
