The U.S. Open of Surfing kicks off during one of the warmest weekends of the year in Southern California. Marin Austin reports for the NBC4 News at 11 a.m. on Friday July 22, 2016. (Published Friday, July 22, 2016)

Some 1 million people are expected to converage beginning Saturday through next week for the annual Vans US Open of Surfing event to be held Saturday, July 23 through July 31 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

To help prevent a repeat of rioting that happened at the event in 2013, police discourage alcohol and said they'd be patrolling heavily in uniform and undercover.

Two years ago, the event erupted with looting and rioting after it closed, but last year it was scaled down as organizers dropped music concerts and focused just on the surfing competitions.

Event sponsors have put out a list of tips on what to bring and not to bring, transportation, maps and other useful tips on getting around.

    Here's a list of tips:

    What to bring:

    • Sunscreen
    • Water
    • Camera
    • Footwear
    • Sunglasses

    What not to bring:

    • Weapons of any kind

    • Beach Toys (footballs and frisbees)
    • A bad attitude
