Torrance, Calif.--Two people were critically injured Thursday night in an ultralight airplane crash at Torrance Airport. One of the people died Friday morning.

According to preliminary reports, the plane was experiencing "mechanical difficulties" when it took off, Captain Steve Deuel of the Torrance Fire Department said.

"The plane got about 75 to 100 feet in the air before it came down,"Deuel said.

The plane, which was reportedly involved in a training flight, experienced problems while leaving the hangar area, took off and came back down, Deuel said.

"Two people were taken to local trauma centers in critical condition," Deuel said.

The crash was reported at 9:09 p.m., Deuel said.
