Underwood Family Farms: Fall Fest Opens

The large harvest festival has cute animals, a corn maze, and themed weekends, too, all in Moorpark.

If March enters like a lamb, and August starts with the dog days of summer, how does one send September off and officially begin October?

You might say October rolls in like a pumpkin, and it's a notion that is fully on display in Moorpark in 2017. That's the location of Underwood Family Farms, the year-round agricultural destination that invites people to purchase very fresh produce as they admire the famous Underwood goats walking overhead.

But starting on Saturday, Sept. 30, and trotting, goat-like, all the way to Halloween, is what might be the produce-laden location's biggest moment on the calendar: the Fall Harvest Festival.

It's as huge as the hugest squash in the field, as harvest festivals go, and that it keeps open hours on weekdays, and not just weekends, tells the story: A lot of Southern Californians want to get their seasonal fun on, and how.

The 2017 schedule for the 20th annual festival includes the traditional themed weekends — Friends of the Farm Weekend, Farm Country Weekend, Antique Tractor Weekend, Western Weekend, and All About Pumpkins Weekend — and a bevy of ongoing daily pursuits and to-dos, like wandering the corn maze, exploring the hay pyramids, or boarding a tractor-drawn wagon ride.

There is food, yes, of a walk-around-and-snack variety. There are bands, too, throughout the run, and shows to see, like Craig's Chicken Show.

And that expansive pumpkin patch? You're about to see it in many friends' social media feeds, as it is one of the go-to regional spots for taking cute kid pics.
