Thousands Without Power After Heat Wave Causes Outages in West LA Area

The weekend heat wave was overloading equipment, forcing outages in West LA and El Segundo.

Residents were plagued with power outages in the West Los Angeles area Saturday after intense weekend heat.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power reported an estimated 4,365 customers without power in West LA near the Sawtelle and Westwood areas Saturday evening.

At its peak, 6,320 residents had no power as crews worked to make permanent repairs.

Power was restored in the area Sunday morning, the LAWDP said.

At 1:48 p.m. Saturday, most customers had power back, but the station continued to overheat, resulting in the 4,365 customers losing power.

Problems began Friday evening when 10,000 customers in West LA were without power.

Extreme heat conditions caused the equipment at the local substation to lose power.

The LADWP reported that it anticipates continued intermittent outages while these repairs are underway. LADWP said it was necessary to protect the existing equipment from being overloaded and failing, which could trigger larger and longer lasting outages.

There was no estimated time for full restoration, according to the LADWP.

Residents in El Segundo also saw outages affecting traffic signals, residents and businesses, according to the El Segundo Police Department.

The cause of the outage was unknown, but Southern California Edison was working to restore power, police said.

The LADWP is posting updates on their Twitter page which can be found here.
