Pursuit Suspect Takes Baby, Grandmother Hostage

The chase suspect held her grandmother and baby at knifepoint.

A highway pursuit ended in a hostage situation when the knife-wielding driver of a stolen vehicle holed herself up with family in Moreno Valley on Saturday, police said.

Briana Ashton Duru, 26, led police on the chase while driving a stolen white pickup truck hauling a trailer, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.

Riverside police first pursued the vehicle around 1:30 a.m. on the eastbound 91 freeway, before the CHP took over when Duru continued on the 215 and 60 Freeways.

After exiting on Perris Boulevard, Duru collided with the entrance gate of an apartment complex and entered one of the apartments, where she held her grandmother and baby at knifepoint.

CHP officers surrounded the apartment, and a patrol sergeant negotiated with Duru for three-and-a-half hours before she allowed her grandmother to leave. Duru eventually put the knife down and was taken into custody.

Duru, the hostages and CHP officers sustained no injuries.

Duru now faces charges of vehicle theft, evading, assault with a deadly weapon and carjacking, among other charges.

No further information was immediately available.
