Ventura City Council to Explore Gun Regulations

A look at tougher regulations on firearms sales is on the docket at a Ventura City Council meeting Monday night.

The city could decide to add another set of rules on top of existing state and federal firearms sales restrictions, including designating particular locations for gun shops.

Council decided to look into adding more restrictions in July.

Council may decide to adopt any of five options used in other California cities that regulate gun sales, including preventing gun sales out of homes and limiting the distance firearms dealers can be located from residential areas, schools and other places where children play.

Ventura crime rates aren't historically higher in areas around gun shops, according to the city report listing the options.

The report notes that "in response to recent gun violence incidents, there is a state of heightened awareness" around gun control.

The Ventura County Fairgrounds is set to host a gun show this weekend.
