Evacuations Lifted as Crews Knocked Down Walnut Fire

A small brush fire burning near homes in Walnut has been extinguished after forcing residents to evacuate Friday afternoon amid the most serious red flag warnings in some five years.

The fire broke out shortly after 5 p.m. near Grand Avenue and La Puente Road. It was extinguished within an hour and no injuries were reported.

Aerial footage showed smoke billowing from a green space between housing developments. Residents along Arabian Lane to Spur Trail had been evacuated, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

The blaze burned through medium brush. Crews overhead and on the ground tackled the fire, which grew to consume about 2 acres.

Temperatures in the area hovered in the low 90s with 6 percent humidity and wind gusts about 11 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
