Water Main Break Floods Street in East Los Angeles

A homeowner getting ready for bed thought it was raining outside, opened the door and called the sight of rushing water "incredible"

A water main break sent water gushing down an East Los Angeles street as crews expected to work more than 12 hours on Wednesday to repair it.

The 6-inch main burst with fast-moving water in the 5100 block of Dartmouth Avenue Tuesday night, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A homeowner getting ready for bed thought it was raining outside, opened the door and called the sight of rushing water "incredible."

Crews turned off the water just after 12 a.m., but the repairs weren't expected to be complete until 2 p.m. Wednesday. About 20 to 30 businesses and homes were without water, officials said.

Crews checked out Lombardy Boulevard and Dartmouth Avenue to see if the road might be compromised, though there was no obvious damage.

A house on Dartmouth Avenue suffered unspecified damages.
