Hollywood Intersection Reopens After Water Main Break

The water main break occurred around 4:15 p.m. Monday.

A busy Hollywood intersection fully reopened Tuesday morning after crews were able to fix a large water main break.

The water flow was reported about 4:15 p.m. Monday at Santa Monica Boulevard and Highland Avenue and forced the intersection to shut down during rush-hour traffic and through the night.

Crews worked overnight to clean up streets and repair pipes. At around 5 a.m. another leak developed on the same lane.

All lanes of traffic were reopened as of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday

Neighbors expressed frustration over the break. A pipe burst a few feet away in the same intersection just a few months ago.

"They need to start fixing the problem before it happens," a Los Angeles resident said..

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power estimates that there are at least three water main breaks every day, but they are mostly small. According to LADWP, water main breaks are down 37 percent since 2006.

LADWP officials said they believed it was a 12-inch pipe that broke. The pipe was almost 90 years old.
