Water Main Breaks Flood Boyle Heights Streets

The first was reported at around midnight, and a second struck less than a mile away 90 minutes later

Streets were flooded after Boyle Heights was hit by two separate water main breaks overnight Tuesday.

The first was reported at around midnight at the 2900 block of East 11th Street, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said. It is an industrial area. The eight inch main was installed back in 1930 a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokesman said, and 15-20 customers are without water due to the break.

Less than a mile away at the intersection of 8th and South Concord Street another main broke at around 1:30 a.m, an LAFD spokesman said. Up to 600 gallons of water were being lost every minute, according to firefighters. An LADWP spokesman said this eight inch pipe dated from 1933.

Crews are working to repair the problem, and it is hoped water will be restored in six to eight hours.

Meanwhile a third main break happened on the 1100 block of Wilcox in Hollywood at around 3 a.m.

The 8 inch main was was shut off 5:10 a.m, and there are up to 15 customers affected.
