Weekend: Dog Film Festival

Canines get the cinematic love at The Crest Westwood.

Dog Film Festival: There's no way you can hear the names "Benji" or "Lassie" without feeling a heart tug. And there's no way you can spend a Sunday watching films filled with Fido goodness without wanting to rush home to your own pup, arms spread wide. The traveling canine-focused movie event lands at The Crest Westwood on June 5, with a kick-off Afternoon Tea Pooch Party on Saturday, June 4. There shall be adoptable dogs in attendance, so let the heart tugs commence.

Gilmore Heritage Auto Show: Lots of wowza cars have pulled into the clocktowered landmark at Third & Fairfax over the years -- after all, the location was once the home to Gilmore Oil and Gilmore Stadium -- but on the first Saturday in June, over 100 shiny vintage vehicles hit the brakes. Ogle all you like at the free Original Farmers Market event, which makes convertibles the 2016 theme.

Dance DTLA Kick-off: Shimmying alongside hundreds of Angelenos, while you learn steps straight from a Bollywood film or a disco circa 1978, and doing so for free? It's a downtown summertime favorite, and it starts on Friday, June 3. The place is Music Center Plaza -- you knew that -- and the Friday-filled music-y good times last right through to the Friday before Labor Day.

Backbone Trail: You've hiked the Santa Monica Mountains, perhaps, and perhaps you've done so plenty of times. But for the first time ever, a 67-mile path will be fully and officially open starting on Friday, June 3. That's long, so long it wends from Ventura County to LA (or vice-versa). The Los Angeles side start point? Will Rogers State Historic Park.

Free Flicks: The Los Angele Film Festival is under way, and as is tradition a few pay-nothing movies are on the brimming-to-overflowing schedule. "Ghostbusters" from 1984 will play at Figat7th on Friday, June 3, and the first "Independence Day" will follow on Saturday, June 4. There's free popcorn, too, and restaurants nearby if you want to do dinner. But will you order something with marshmallows? The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man would approve.
