Man Shot by LA School Police Officer in Westlake

A man was hospitalized in unknown condition early Saturday after being shot by a Los Angeles School Police officer in the Westlake district, authorities said.

The shooting occurred just before 3 a.m. near the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Union Avenue, according to the LAPD Rampart Division.

Officers were in the midst of doing routine duties, when they spotted a man holding a knife in a threatening manner, Ramirez said. Two officers asked him to drop it, but he did not comply.

At some point the officers utilized a non-lethal bean bag and a foot pursuit began. Officers chased him before using a bean bag a second time. Shortly after, an officer-involved shooting occurred, according to Ramirez.

Paramedics rushed the shooting victim to an area hospital, where his condition was not known, he said.

The age of the victim was not immediately available. The officer was not injured.

What led up to the shooting was unknown.
