It's that time of summer where Angelinos are used to hearing the phrase 'record breaking high temperatures.' But 'record breaking lows?'

A pattern of cool weather has many Californians wondering if they need to forget the suntan lotion and buy a sweater.

LAX broke the record for low temperature for the day registering a chilly 68 degrees. The previous record was 70 degrees.

During the month of July high temperatures have been well below normal across the coastal and valley areas, according to the National Weather Service.

"The summer has played out much cooler than the early-summer long range predictions,” said NBCLA Weathercaster Fritz Coleman.

A strong marine layer has kept most of the Southland chillier than usual. The marine influence has been especially strong during the night and morning clouds haven't been burning off until later in the day. In some areas, not at all.

The question on everyone's mind though: will it get warmer or stay the same?

"We're being cautious about predictions for August and September," Coleman said. "At the very least, we expect to start August with a continuation of an above-average affect of the onshore flow and marine layer and temperatures that will continue to trend on the low side of normal."

A sweater may not be a bad bet.
