A fire that broke out late Tuesday afternoon in a canyon north of Banning quickly blackened 70 acres, but no structures were immediately threatened.

The blaze was coined the "Potrero Fire" and was reported at 4:44 p.m. in Hathaway Canyon near Potrero Canyon and Foothill roads, said Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department.

Around 150 firefighters, three helicopters, five air tankers and three bulldozers were dispatched to the scene, Hagemann said.

No homes were threatened, thus no evacuation orders have been issued.  There were no reports of injuries.
