4 Hurt, Including Mom and Child, in San Fernando Valley Collision

Four people, including a mother and her 5-year-old daughter, were hurt after a three-car chain-reaction crash in a San Fernando Valley intersection Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.

The crash was reported near at Roscoe Boulevard and Winnetka Avenue about 1:50 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. An elementary school is on the corner of the intersection.

Los Angeles Police Officer Joe Rios said one car hit a second car, which hit a third car. The first car continued through the intersection and struck a mother and 5-year-old girl waiting to cross the street, he said.

Rios first said the girl was 6 years old, but officers at the scene later said the child was 5 years old.

"All I see is this red car (coming) close to me and hit the sidewalk right in front of me, and running over two people," one of the drivers, Brayan Joseph, told NBC4.

The child was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.

"It could have been worse, because at this time this is when typically, the time, that children get out from school," LAPD Detective William Bustos said.

LA fire officials said the two others injured, a man in his 60s and woman in her 20s, were inside one of the cars, both in fair condition.

Aerial video showed an SUV and a sedan with damage to the front end, and a van with its front hood up.

Additional details were not immediately available.
