Armed home-invasion robbers' attempt to steal cash failed Tuesday morning when the residents told them they had no cash, police said.
The drama started after 9 a.m. Thursday when a woman knocked on the door of a home on Coralwood Lane in Huntington Beach asking for someone by name who the residents didn't know, police said. Then two men armed with guns walked in and tried to rob them, police said.
A mother and a father, their pregnant daughter, her husband and a teenager taking a shower, were inside the home at the time of the robbery, but no one was hurt.
The father who didn't want to be identified said it was scary. He went into autopilot mode, exchanged words with the robbers and then he ran outside, trying to get help. He said security cameras mounted outside his door caught the thieves running away.
Police only had vague descriptions of the men, both African American, in their 30s, one wearing a gray T-shirt, dark black jeans and a black knit cap.
There was no clothing description for the second man, said Officer Jennifer Marlett, of the Huntington Beach Police Department.
Police earlier had received calls from the area about a suspicious 2002 white Chevy Malibu, but it was not clear whether it was connected to Tuesday morning's home invasion.
Neighbors were shocked.
"They seem like very nice people. I'm shocked anyone would target them to invade their home," said Roderick Higginbotham.
