Woman Dies at Market After Acting Erratically, Removing Clothes

Witnesses said she was confronted by security guards and detained prior to her death.

A woman died while in the custody of security guards at El Toro market in Santa Ana Wednesday morning, soon after witnesses said she began acting erratically and removing her clothes in the store.

Around 9 a.m., the woman entered the store on First Street. She began making a scene inside the market and started taking off articles of clothing in the liquor department, police said.

"They didn't know if she's under the influence of alcohol, or drugs, or she's just acting crazy," said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department.

Security guards confronted her and ended up in a scuffle with the woman, who was handcuffed while police were called.

When police arrived, the woman, described only as in her 40s, was dead.

Cause of death was not immediately clear. Santa Ana Police Department homicide detectives are investigating.
