Woman Killed in Long Beach is Identified

A woman shot and killed in Long Beach in a suspected case of domestic violence was identified Tuesday as Jerica Owens, 26, and police detained two men in connection with the case.

It started about 8:30 a.m. when officers responding to a domestic violence call heard gunshots and discovered Owens' body in an alley in the 1900 block of Chestnut Avenue, said Sgt. Erik Herzog, of the Long Beach Police Department.

Two men were detained in connection with the shooting, but details were not immediately available.

A toddler, barely clothed, was seen running with one of the men. The toddler was not harmed and was placed into the care of child protective services.

Neighbors were shocked.

"They were running," said Romeo Sanchez. "The child was naked. He got in and entered the hotel and that's when the cops all showed up."

Police could not immediately confirm the victim's relationship with the shooter and the toddler.

Witnesses were shocked, especially with Christmas days away.

"It's two, three days before Christmas," said Sanchez. "Nobody wants this to happen."

Terrel Warren, a neighbor, was distraught.

"The kid, I know he would want his mother in his life with Christmas coming up," he said. "Prayers going up for him and his family."
