Five young children were injured today -- and one was pinned under a car -- when a woman taking a child to a preschool in Huntington Beach accidentally drove her car into the building, a fire official said.

The accident occurred about 7:45 a.m. at Childtime preschool, 9861 Yorktown Ave., said Martha Werth of the Huntington Beach Fire Department.

Two victims were seriously injured in the accident and one was in fair condition, Werth said.

The other victim, the 3-year-old boy who was pinned beneath the car after it came to a stop, was doing "worse than anticipated," and was expected to undergo surgery this afternoon, Werth said.

Officer Richard Wright of the Huntington Beach Police Department told KCAL 9 that the car, a red BMW, was about two-thirds into the preschool when he arrived on the scene. Wright and an off-duty firefighter pushed the car while someone inside the preschool helped pull the boy out from under the car.

Three other children had minor injuries, Werth said. All are under the age of 5, and all were taken to a hospital and were in fair condition.

Authorities were examining the BMW to try to figure out what caused the crash, said an officer with the Huntington Beach Police Department.
