Mother, 4-Year-Old Daughter Killed in Long Beach Shooting

A woman and 4-year-old were killed in a shooting in Long Beach Saturday evening, authorities said.

The victims' husband and father, Luis Anaya, identified the victims as Jennebel Anaya, 4, and Carina Mancera, 26.

Anaya said he parked his car on 9th Street after returning from the market. His wife and daughter were walking across the street to their apartment on Locust Avenue when Anaya heard gunfire.

He said he saw a man on foot shoot his wife and daughter, adding that the man fired at him and missed.

Police had not yet verified Anaya's account of what happened. At a Monday news conferece, police asked witnesses to step forward with information.

Paramedics responded to the area of 9th Street and Locust Avenue at 10:21 p.m. where they found Mancera suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Mancera, the child's mother, died at the scene, police said. Her 4-year-old daughter, who was suffering from a gunshot wound, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

She later died from her injuries at the hospital, said Lieutenant Eric Herzog with the Long Beach Police Department.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Anaya cover their funeral costs. "Our family is heartbroken with this tragic event, and we hope that you can help us give these two beautiful souls a graceful resting place," the page read.

The GoFundMe hoped to raise $25,000.

Friends and family of the victims were gathering where the shooting took place Sunday. Mancera's mother was scene repeatedly crying "Why?" in Spanish.
