Wrong-Way Driver Hits Cars, Ties Up Traffic

The driver may have been experiencing diabetic shock as he drove, CHP officials say

A wrong-way driver on the 14 Freeway near Santa Clarita hit several cars before stopping in the carpool lane and tying up traffic for hours Friday night.

Witnesses first alerted authorities to a person driving erratically on side streets in Santa Clarita about 7:15 PM, LA County Sheriff's Deputy Josh Dubin told NBC4.

The car eventually reached the 14 Freeway and drove southbound on the northbound lanes, hitting up to 10 vehicles in the process, Dubin said.

When California Highway Patrol officers reached the car near the Golden Valley Road exit, they found it stopped in the carpool lane.

Aerial footage showed a CHP cruiser pushing the vehicle to the side of the roadway before lanes reopened minutes later.

The driver may have been experiencing diabetic shock as he drove and was not arrested for DUI, CHP Officer Peter Bishop said.

The driver may have mistaken the carpool lane for the freeway’s slow-speed lane, Bishop added.

Aerial footage showed the driver getting on a stretcher with the help of officers before being taken to a hospital.
