A young child was in a car during a dangerous high speed pursuit that ended in Santa Ana early Tuesday.

The chase, which started at around 1 a.m, reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Officers tried to pull a Ford Mustang over on the southbound 5 Freeway, however it took the 4th Street exit and drove through residential streets at a rapid pace.

The car eventually got back on the northbound 55 Freeway but ran out of gas on the westbound 22 Freeway.

After the driver was taken into custody, the offcers noticed he had a woman and child in the vehicle with him.

The youngster was between 4 and 5 years old, and was not in a car seat.

The driver is expected to be charged with evading law enforcement, reckless driving and child endangerment.
