When Sheridan Hope called his daughter to tell her he had just won more than $300,000 playing Daily Derby, his daughter thought he was merely horsing around.
Little did she know that Hope, a Vietnam vet and former drill sergeant, had luck on his side.
Hope correctly picked three horses to come in first, second and third – Whirl Win, Lucky Star, and Gold Rush, according to a California Lottery press release issued Feb. 8.
In addition to picking the winning horses, Hope correctly chose the final race time of 1:42.14.
The Carson resident plans on using the $320,315 in winnings to pay off his house and debt, California Lottery spokesperson Elias Dominguez said.
Hope told California Lottery officials that he will save the rest for his retirement.
The LA County store that sold the winning ticket, Henry’s Market on South Avalon Boulevard, will not receive a retailer bonus officials said.
