A mother and son accused in a Long Beach home invasion that left one woman dead appeared in court Monday as the suspects' family spoke out against the charges. Hetty Chang reports for the NBC4 News at Noon on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014.

The father of a man accused in a home invasion that left a woman dead said the homeowner who shot her should "go to hell for shooting somebody that says 'don't shoot.'"

Russell Costello, whose son and wife are charged in connection with the July 23 Long Beach home invasion shooting, spoke to NBC4 outside of court Monday. Wife Ruby Adams, 49, is accused of serving as a lookout while her 26-year-old son, Gus, and his girlfriend allegedly broke into a Bixby Knolls home  and assaulted the homeowner.

The homeowner, 80-year-old Tom Greer, grabbed his gun and shot Gus' girlfriend, Andrea Miller, 28. Costello said his wife had no idea what was happening.

"She's only got a few months to live, and she never knew nothing about this. This is wrong for what they are doing to her," Costello said. "She was just getting a ride from my son. She didn't know what was going on."

Ruby Adams was charged in connection with burglary, robbery and elder abuse in the incident. Because the home invasion resulted in a death, Gus Adams faces five felony counts including murder and robbery.

The night of the confrontation, Miller told the homeowner not to shoot her because she was "going to have a baby," but the coroner confirmed to NBC4 that Miller was not pregnant when she was killed.

"That girl said, 'Don't shoot, I'm pregnant,' and he shot her anyway, so that shows that he didn't care what happened," Costello said. "He should go to hell for shooting somebody that says 'don't shoot.'"

Greer has not been charged with any crime. Arraignment for Gus and Ruby Adams was postponed until September.
