Man Shot, Killed On Sidewalk in Front of Sister in Hawthorne

The shooting occurred near an elementary school.

The coroner on Monday identified a man who was fatally shot in front of his sister on a Hawthorne sidewalk, authorities said.

The victim, identified as 38-year-old Delray Yarbrough, was defending his sister from two men who approached them Sunday night, Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives said.

Yarbrough, a Hawthorne resident, was standing in front of his apartment with his sister in the 11900 block of York Avenue when two men confronted the siblings, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

After Yarbrough spoke up for his sister, one of the attackers pulled out a handgun and opened fire, neighbors said.

NBA star Paul Pierce tweeted about Yarbrough, saying he was in disbelief over his friend’s death.

Yarbrough's friend, who identified himself only as St. Louis, said he seemed like he would recover in the seconds after he was shot.

"Before he got off the ground, he was good, he was talking to us," the friend said.

Both attackers jumped into a dark blue car and fled south on York Avenue, deputies said. Yarbrough was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"You're not (going) to let nobody, I don't care who it is, disrespect your sister out here," said a friend who called himself St. Louis.

Friends said Yarbrough was a good man who often tried to help others.

"I've been crying all morning, (they) killed my friend. That's really sad," said Stan Chuks, one of the victim's best friends.

A steady stream of visitors arrived to the Yarbrough family home Monday.

Everybody knows him, he waves hello to everybody, no problem," said a person at the home."It's shocking."

UPDATE: This story was updated with official information identifying Yarbrough at 1:52 p.m. on Monday, March 9.
