Man Shot, Wounded by Police at Long Beach City College PCH Campus

The man shot at police and then ran away before officers returned fire and struck him in the leg, police say

A man was shot and wounded Thursday on the Pacific Coast campus of Long Beach City College after allegedly trying to shoot at officers, police said.

The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. at Pacific Coast Highway and Orange Avenue between Walnut Avenue and Orange Avenue, about five miles from LBCC's main campus, said Marlene Arrona of the Long Beach Police Department.

Several people began arguing on the campus before one man ran away, police said.

Officers asked him to show them what was in his backpack before he led them on a chase through campus, including through a classroom full of students, police said.

Officers then heard a gunshot and returned fire, striking the man in the leg, police said. The alleged gunman was then taken into custody.

Police found a gun at the scene but did not say where or what kind.

"We are very fortunate that no one else was injured," LBCC President Eloy Oakley said.

Aerial video showed blood on the ground next to a black backpack. Caution tape could be seen lining buildings and nearby streets.

Classes were meeting as scheduled, school officials said. Details about the shooter were not immediately available.
