Stolen Prius Pursuit Ends After Racing Through 2 SoCal Counties

The chase reached speeds up to 105 mph after moving from Sunset Boulevard onto four Southern California freeways

Los Angeles police took the driver of a stolen Toyota Prius into custody Thursday night after the vehicle raced from city to city on Southern California freeways, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The chase started on Sunset Boulevard about 10:45 p.m. and moved from Hollywood streets to the Hollywood (101) Freeway in the San Fernando Valley, police said.

Occupants were reportedly throwing items out of the car as it drove at high speeds through Hollywood, North Hollywood, Sylmar, Mission Hills, Simi Valley and Moorpark on the 101, 170, 118 and 23 freeways.

Aerial video showed the silver Toyota weaving in between cars, getting inches away from other vehicles as it passed.

NewsChopper4 clocked speeds up to 105 mph as it kept pace with the car. The Toyota eventually slowed to 15 mph as it left Los Angeles County and entered Ventura County.

Officers used a spike strip and PIT maneuver on the car, forcing the Toyota to spin out and come to a stop on the Moorpark (23) Freeway. The driver and passengers were taken into custody about 11:15 p.m.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft.
