American Red Cross to Gift Smoke Alarms to El Monte Residents

The American Red Cross is handing out free smoke alarms to residents, a continuing effort that follows a recent fatal house fire in El Monte.

Volunteers will be at Mountain View Park Nov. 14 to set up appointments for residents to install smoke alarms in their homes, according to Ben Green of the American Red Cross.

A house fire broke out at 10:04 p.m. Thursday in the 12300 block of Felipe Street, killing two people, officials said. It was unclear whether the house had working smoke detectors.

Back on Oct. 10, the Red Cross installed 250 alarms in 100 homes in El Monte.

They plan to install 10,000 alarms this year, Green said.

The event is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 14 in Mountain View Park.
