Deputies arrested a second teenager in connection with the stabbing death of a 14-year-old boy outside an East LA middle school, officials said Wednesday.
The victim, identified by the coroner as Steven Cruz, 14, was attacked with a sharp object that authorities originally described as scissors Jan. 23 at David Wark Griffith Middle School, near the high school he attended, according to the LA County Sheriff's Department.
While the LAUSD first said Cruz was attacked with scissors, deputies later described the weapon as a knife.
Authorities arrested a 13-year-old boy one day later. Officials say that teen got the knife from a 14-year-old boy, who was arrested on Tuesday. Both have been booked on suspicion of murder.
The 14-year-old denied one count of murder as well as gang and weapon allegations in juvenile court Wednesday.
At a weekend vigil, mourners left roses above a picture of Cruz in a cap and gown. Cruz's family hasn't spoken with the media, but they did set up a fundraising page online to help pay for services.
"He was friendly and easygoing. He loved his friends and his family with all his heart," his family wrote on the page. It said he was "at the wrong place, at the wrong time" when he was attacked.
