A man was fatally shot by police after a suspected stolen van pursuit ended in the Long Beach area Monday.
The man was shot when running from South Gate police.
The pursuit began in the South Gate area before 1 p.m.
The driver of the van pulled into a store parking lot, and two occupants -- appearing to be a man and a woman -- got out and ran.
The driver and passenger, toting backpacks, ran along railroad tracks near the area of Cherry and Artesia avenues next to the 91 Freeway.
As the pair fled, man pulled something out of his pack and appeared to point it at police. Police opened fire. The man fell to the ground and was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.
The van was abandoned on the back side of a Target store in the 6700 block of Cherry Avenue in Long Beach.

The woman was initially thought to be holed up in a small building near the shooting scene, starting a standoff.
One report indicated that a third person had been in the van, but got out early in the chase and surrendered to police.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was assisting the South Gate Police Department in investigating the shooting.
