The big rig driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, officials say

The Hollywood (101) Freeway reopened after a big rig crash shut down all southbound lanes for more than two hours during rush hour on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported about 3 p.m. near Melrose Avenue, CHP officials said. Traffic was backed up from Santa Monica to Lankershim boulevards for hours as afternoon commuters crawled along the roadway.

Aerial video showed drivers getting out of their cars and walking around when traffic was at a complete stop.

At least four other cars were involved, and at least three people were hospitalized, officials said.

The big rig driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, according to the CHP.

All lanes reopened about 5:20 p.m., but traffic remained slow through the Caheunga Pass.
