A Winnetka family came home on Thanksgiving to find their apartment had gone up in flames.
The Savoie family left their apartment to celebrate with their relatives Thursday.
When they returned, they found a fire had started in their apartment, killing their two cats.
The fire destroyed everything they owned, including Christmas presents for their 2-year-old.
"All his gifts were destroyed, and pretty much I'm just grateful that we're still alive, that's all that matters," Vicky Lara said.
The family is now staying with relatives.
