She lived in the apartment with her son, Moises Diaz, 40, who was arrested in connection with her death, Burbank police said in a news conference Monday night.

Neighbors told NBC4 the woman was loved and well-known in the area, and she would leave Christmas presents on her neighbors' doorsteps.

"She would always come bearing gifts, tomatoes and a little bit of food," neighbor Robert Blandon said. "She was a very friendly person, and I'm shocked really."

Diaz was being held in lieu of $1 million bail. Police have not released the woman's cause of death.

This is the first murder in Burbank since late 2012, police said.
