A mammoth winter storm dumped as much as two feet of snow across the Northeast and Midwest on Friday and triggered a dangerous deep freeze, as temperatures plunged to single digits and below zero. The storm was blamed for at least 13 deaths on Friday, the Associated Press reported, most of them from fatal traffic accidents. In suburban Philadelphia, a man was crushed by a 100-foot-tall pile of salt, while in western New York, a woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease froze to death after wandering from her home. The storm prompted winter weather and wind-chill advisories in at least 22 states, affecting more than 100 million people, and thousands of flights were canceled. Schools were closed for millions, with all New York City and Boston public school students given a snow day. But the snow was just the beginning of the trouble for the Northeast, as it braces for bone-chilling temperature drops Friday night.
