Wild Start to GOP Primary Season at "Freedom Summit"

Iowa congressman Steve King has declared that the 2016 Republican primary will be the "greatest show in America," and with at least 15 people vying to be the Republican presidential candidate, he might be right. There's still a year left before anyone will vote, but the GOP contest has already turned into an intriguing mix of ambition, ego and ideology. Some of the biggest names in conservatism gave speeches at the nine-hour "Iowa Freedom Summit" on Saturday, including likely presidential candidates Texas Gov. Rick Perry, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. They blasted President Obama's executive action on immigration and said they'd work to repeal Obamacare. Read »

Obama Sends Condolences to Japan After ISIS Murders Hostage

The White House said President Barack Obama offered condolences to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday after a Japanese citizen was apparently executed by ISIS militants, NBC News reported. Abe said chances were high that ISIS's recording and image of the execution of hostage Haruna Yukawa were authentic. Abe called for the immediate release of the second Japanese hostage, journalist Kenji Goto. ISIS appears to be asking for the release of a female prisoner in a new video after originally demanding a $200 million ransom for the hostages' release. "This kind of action is an outrageous and unforgivable act of violence and we strongly condemn it," Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary said at a news conference. In a statement, President Barack Obama expressed outrage over the beheading, saying: "We renew our call for the immediate release of Kenji Goto and all other remaining hostages." Read »
