Syrian Regime, Iraqi Kurds Buying ISIS Oil: Official

ISIS makes money by selling oil from seized territories to the Syrian government and to Kurds in Iraq, a U.S. official said Thursday, NBC News reported. Undersecretary David Cohen of the Treasury Department said ISIS “has amassed wealth at an unprecedented pace,” explaining that the militants rely on black-market oil sales, extortion and ransom payments. He did not specify who among the Kurds was buying, but the cooperation of Iraqi Kurds, along with the main government of Iraq and rebels in Syria, is a critical part of the American strategy to fight ISIS. Canadian Shooter Was Planning to Travel to Syria

The man who gunned down a Canadian soldier before storming into Parliament on Wednesday, where he was shot dead, was not under surveillance, nor on a list of about 90 travelers being monitored by Canadian police, officials said at a news conference Thursday. Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, had been in Ottawa since at least Oct. 2 to "deal with a passport issue, but was hoping to leave for Syria," Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Bob Paulson said. Zehaf-Bibeau, who may have had a dual citizenship with Libya, had several low-level criminal offenses, but was not deemed to be a threat to national security. Read »

Protesters clashed with police in Ferguson, Missouri, overnight Wednesday after the leak of a new autopsy report detailing the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, NBC News reported. A crowd of about 200 gathered near the city’s police department as some protesters knocked down barricades and hurled objects at police. The protests were apparently fueled by the leak of Brown’s autopsy report this week to media outlets.
