Artist Shows Average U.S. Man Is on the Porky Side

New artist renderings of the average male body will leave American men feeling like they've been kicked in the gut.

Based on artist Nickolay Lamm's 3-D computer-generate avatars, American men ages 30 to 39 sport the biggest guts and butts. Lamm used the Centers for Disease Control's body-mass measurements to help him understand the shape of an "average" U.S. adult male. He also created computer avatars that represent the average Dutch, French and Japanese man.

"Rather than explaining it in bar graphs or pie charts, I thought it would be a lot more powerful to visually see what we looked like compare to other countries," Lamm told NBC News.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) for a typical American adult is 28.6, according to the CDC. BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered "normal," while 25 to 29.9 is "overweight." A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.

The avatar of the average Japanese male reflects a national BMI of 23.7. The Netherlands avatar shows a 25.2 BMI, and the avatar for France represents a 25.5 BMI.

Lamm said he also used photos of men with the CDC's BMI to help him create the 3-D models.
