$64,000 in Cocaine Found in Platform Shoes, Pocketbook at JFK: Officials

A woman faces federal narcotics smuggling charges after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at John F. Kennedy International Airport allegedly found nearly $65,000 worth of cocaine stashed in two pairs of platform shoes and a pocketbook when she arrived there earlier this month.

Customs agents stopped the woman for a routine check after she got off a flight from Jamaica Sept. 19. officers thought two pairs of platform shoes in her luggage seemed unusually heavy and brought her to a private search area, where they pulled apart the shoes and found a white powder that tested positive for cocaine, authorities alleged.

A similar substance was allegedly found in her pocketbook. That substance also tested positive for cocaine, officials said.

The woman was arrested on a charge of importing a controlled substance and turned over to Department of Homeland Security investigators. Authorities later said she would face federal charges.

A total of 3.7 pounds of cocaine worth about $64,000 on the street was recovered.
