US Duo Drops Match to Austria in Men's Beach Volleyball

In an upset on the Olympic sand, Americans Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson lost their second beach volleyball preliminary match to Austria's Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl Monday afternoon.

The Austrian team won in two sets, both 21-18. Huber and Seidl are unranked, while Gibb and Patterson were seeded sixth in the Olympic rankings. It leaves the Austrians on top of Pool F, with the Americans in second, followed by Spain and Qatar.

The Americans won their first match against Qatar’s Jefferson and Cherif in their first preliminary match Saturday. They took the first set 21-16 and took an early lead in the second set but Qatar quickly responded, trailing close behind at 14-13. Gibb and Patterson pulled away to win the match 21-16, 21-16.

It's Gibb's third Olympics. Patterson made his professional beach volleyball debut in 2003, playing in the summer while competing professionally on indoor teams in Puerto Rico and Sweden.

He paired with Gibb, the oldest player in the field, in 2013.
