Dog Named Dart Escapes at Newark Airport, Rescued From Marsh

It took a row boat to rescue Dart the collie from the New Jersey swamp he got trapped in

A dog preparing to fly to Asia with his owner from Newark Airport escaped his airline pet corral and embarked on a 45-minute adventure through the airport before getting stuck in a flooded marsh, where Port Authority police rescued him, officials say.

The collie named Dart was being held at the United Airlines PetSafe at Terminal C Monday when he got loose and escaped about 8 a.m., police said.

True to his name, the collie darted through traffic and several parking lots from the terminal to a rental car lot next to a gas station on Brewster and Lindbergh roads.

He then ran into a flooded marsh area and got stuck in the mud there, police said. He was unable to walk or run out of the ditch.

Port Authority police brought a row boat and animal snare to the marsh and rowed about 50 feet to ensnare Dart and bring him into the boat. He was cleaned and safely reunited with his owner.

Dart wasn't injured, and there was no disruption to travel, police said.
