An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 hit the Solomon Islands Saturday (Friday in the United States) a day after an even more powerful quake caused damage in remote parts of the nation in the Pacific.

The temblor on Saturday came 90 km west southwest of Kirakira, at a depth of 10 km. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center expect that there was no tsunami threat for the Pacific.

Hundreds of people in remote parts of the islands had their homes damaged or destroyed by the powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Friday, an aid organization said, though there were no deaths reported. It also caused some small tsunami waves in the Solomon Islands and other Pacific islands.

The Solomon Islands are located in the Pacific's geologically active "Ring of Fire."
