Man Charged in Wife's Murder Tells 911 He Took Too Much Cold Medicine

Matthew Phelps had called 911 after he said he woke up and found his wife dead on the floor, describing that there was blood "all over me" and "a bloody knife"

A North Carolina man charged with the murder of his wife told a 911 dispatcher early Friday morning that he may have killed her after taking too much cold medicine, NBC News reported.

Matthew Phelps, 28, had his first court appearance on Tuesday, where the judge told him he could receive "death or life in prison without the possibility of parole."

"I think I did it," Phelps told 911 after he said he woke up and found his wife dead on the floor, describing that there was blood "all over me" and "a bloody knife."

"I took more medicine than I should have," he said. "I took Coricidin ... because I know it can make you feel good, so a lot of times I can’t sleep at night so I took some."
