Baby Born on I-595 During Thursday Rush Hour

Baby Arrives On Way To Birthing Center

A mom and dad got quite a surprise when they were on I-595 during rush hour Thursday evening. The couple welcomed their newest addition to the family on the busy roadway.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a call about a baby delivery on the interstate a little after 6 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, they found the mom and her newborn bundle of joy.

It turns out, the mom is a neo-natal intensive care nurse and she walked him through the entire birthing process.

"She kind of walked him through it," said paramedia Rolando Busto. "She's a NICU nurse, so he caught the baby."

The family was on the way to Hollywood Birthing Center, but didn't quite make it.

Busto and fellow paramedic David Porter responded and said all they had to do was cut the umbilical cord and make sure the baby was healthy.

Mom and baby were taken to Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale and both are said to be doing fine after the impromptu delivery.

"It's a great experience. A new birth. A new life," Porter said.

Fort Lauderdale Fire posted a picture of the baby and said both mom and baby are doing fine after the impromptu delivery.
