Vogue Endorses Clinton for President

"Her years as Secretary of State have shown that she understands how to strengthen alliances abroad, respond to global crises, and continue American leadership in the world," the magazine said of Clinton

For the first time in the magazine's history, Vogue has endorsed a presidential candidate, urging readers to vote for Hillary Clinton.

In an editorial published on Tuesday, the fashion magazine’s board made it clear that they're endorsing the Democratic presidential nominee because of the “the profound stakes” of this election, in addition to “the history that stands to be made.”

"Her years as Secretary of State have shown that she understands how to strengthen alliances abroad, respond to global crises, and continue American leadership in the world," the magazine said of Clinton. "She is forceful in her support for LGBTQ rights, including an end to discrimination against transgender people. She knows the challenges working women face."

The magazine said “deeply divided America” will need an experienced, competent leader and Clinton is the right choice.

Vogue is just the latest of a number of publications to break from tradition and speak out on the election.

USA Today did not officially support Clinton, but instead published an editorial urging Americans to not vote for Donald Trump. Wired backed Clinton for its first-ever presidential endorsement. The Atlantic endorsed Clinton for its third-ever political recommendation (the previous two endorsements were to Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964). And conservative newspapers like the Arizona Republic and The Cincinnati Enquirer have endorsed the former secretary of state for president.

“We understand that Clinton has not always been a perfect candidate, yet her fierce intelligence and considerable experience are reflected in policies and positions that are clear, sound, and hopeful,” Vogue wrote.

Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour is a longtime supporter of Clinton, according to Politico.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump received one endorsement from a daily newspaper during the general election. It came from the St. Joseph News-Press of northwest Missouri.

The Chicago Tribune, Detroit News and Richmond Times-Dispatch endorsed Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson.
