A 3-year-old girl was shot in the arm when a fight broke out in a busy Yonkers, N.Y. intersection Friday afternoon, police say.
The toddler was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where she was underwent surgery, according to police. She is in good condition.
Officers got the call on Palisade Avenue and Locust Hill Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. The gunfire erupted during what appeared to be a fight among a group of men, according to witnesses.
Telemundo-TV reports the girl was going with her parents to visit her aunt, who owns a bodega in the area. The aunt told Telemundo the girl began screaming as soon as she was hit by the bullet.
Police swarmed the scene in the Getty Square section of Yonkers and quickly brought two men into custody.
"We're not going to call them suspects right now but there are people of interest in custody," said Yonkers Detective Lt. Joseph Monaco. "Right now, we're not looking for anybody else."
Those who live and work in the neighborhood said the burst of violence was jarring, especially for families.
"I always walk the kids through the square," said Qiana Smith. "This area's pretty safe."
