A senior aide to Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) was stopped at a security checkpoint at the Hart Senate Office Building, NBC confirmed on Wednesday.

Marcus Stanley, who has worked on Capitol Hill since 2007, was trying to enter the Constitution Avenue entrance on Tuesday when he went to a security checkpoint and emptied his pockets. That's when officers noticed a green leafy substance, NBC Washington confirmed.

The substance later tested positive for marijuana, Politico.com reported.

Zachary Coile, a spokesman for Boxer, told KSBW-TV in Salinas, Calif., that Stanley "submitted his resignation and Sen. Boxer accepted it because his actions yesterday were wrong and unacceptable."

Boxer is currently in a dead heat to defend her Senate seat against HP CEO Carly Fiorina. According to a Rasmussen survey taken on Monday, Fiorina is 1 percentage point ahead of Boxer. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.
